AVANT Gallery, August 2022

An unexpected surprise in Hudson Yards.

Truth be told, this started like a shopping spree in Manhattan’s brand new The Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards, a magnificently architected space with a collection of stores one sees in the shopping malls in Hong Kong and Singapore.

We were amazed to find right across from the Vessel - Manhattan’s new and notorious, unfortunately, landmark - a hidden gem, the AVANT Gallery.

Our curiosity was intrigued by the modern sculpture in the display of a Chanel can bursting with pink pearls. We stepped in a wonderful selection of well known and up and coming artists. Interestingly, a few of the works were done by artists when they were as young as fourteen years old.

The Vessel

Beautiful views of The Vessel from inside the AVANT Gallery.

Since its launch in Miami Beach in 2007, Avant Gallery has become an exciting and innovative presence in the art world, committed to representing both established as well as early-to-mid-career contemporary artists. The gallery has always spearheaded the accessibility factor of its presentation and modus operandi by choosing to open its locations in lifestyle-driven destinations. Today, Avant operates in five venues, including its New York City flagship at Hudson Yards, in the heart of Miami at Brickell City Centre, in Aventura in the luxury wing of Aventura Mall, in West Palm Beach at The Square, and an exhibition space in Dubai’s Four Seasons Resort.

Paul Rousso

Paul Rousso’s three-dimensional pieces adorning the walls of the AVANT gallery are like hanging sculptures. Their sheer size and authentic depiction of everyday objects, like a dollar bill or a Kodak film case, invoke the Realism art movement with a twist.

STMTS

Young Greek street artist, Stamatis, amazed us with his intricate brush stroke and his imaginative settings. In this gallery, Stamatis’ works are set in the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. I have had the fortune to witness some of his street art in my parents’ native city of Athens, and while the backdrop is different, his signature brush stroke and captivating imagery are all there.

Skyler Grey

After STMTS, we came across Wunderkind number two in Skyler Grey. Hard to fathom so much commercial success for someone only five years older than my friends and me, but here it is:

I give you, Skyler Grey.
