Anton Kern Gallery, April 2022

Open to all high schoolers the NYC Art Crawl had its inaugural outing in early April 2022 in the Anton Kern Gallery in midtown Manhattan.

Nathalie Du Pasquier and Margot Bergman comprise the majority of the gallery's exhibition this month.  The gallery itself is beautiful as you can see from the entrance.

Du Pasquier's paintings are faithful depictions of real-life models usually situated on a table. Household objects such as a rubber glove or a white and blue china piece become abstract in her very structured brushstrokes and vivid colors.  All her pieces, and in fact the entire first floor of the gallery, are accentuated by a continued red racing stripe painted down the gallery's walls. There is also a specially constructed cabin painted in red and white vertical stripes that houses some more of her work.  It feels as if some of the red models in her art jumped off the painting and continued in the three-dimensional space.

On the top floors, we admired Margot Bergman's work. The fascinating angle in this collection is that she painted over art that she discovered in Chicago thrift shops. These forgotten art pieces gained new life through her additions. Sometimes a face within a face or as you see in Gena below, a 16x14 inch acrylic, a gaping mouth 'opens' the possibility of a curving seaside road.

This particular exhibition is open until April 23. Don't miss it!

On April 22, 2017, Anton Kern Gallery officially opened its doors at 16 East 55th Street. Designed by studioMDA, the six-story townhouse features three floors of exhibition space, with permanent installations by Martino Gamper and Jim Lambie.

Built in the 1930s, 16 East 55th Street housed one of the first boutique hairdressers in New York, rumored to cater to the Roosevelt Family. The building remained as a hairdresser for many years prior to being split into a multiple occupancy building that housed the same antiques dealer for 40 years prior to Anton Kern Gallery’s occupancy. We look forward to welcoming you to our home, situated at the historic center of the New York art scene.
